Equi-shower

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Equi-shower?
It is an overhead showering system for horses/ponies of any size that uses three nozzles positioned along the length of the horses body. It delivers water all over the horse at the same time, so it is an easy, quick and efficient way of 'washing off', or giving a horse a complete soapy bath.

It can be used in existing wash boxes, fixed under the stable overhang, or suspended from wall or post brackets.

Why is an Equi-shower better than using a hose pipe?
Firstly, water is delivered from the top and the majority of the horse is washed concurrently saving time.

Secondly, the horse cannot stand on the water pipe and with an easy to use on/off switch, soaping and scraping is hassle free.

Thirdly, delivering approx. 4.5 litres of water per minute, the shower offers more efficient water usage – up to 75% less over the same period than using a traditional hose pipe.

How does the water enter the Equi-shower system? Is it hot or cold?
You simply connect your standard hosepipe to the Equi-shower water system (all connectors supplied). You can use either hot or cold water. However it is essential not to exceed 'hand hot' temperature at any time nor attach to pressure washers for obvious safety reasons.

How and where do I fix my Equi-shower?
Every stable yard will be different yet the Equi-shower can adapt to nearly all sites. It is up to the user to work out the best position bearing in mind the direction of the water supply.

EXISTING WASH BOXES
are ideal places for the Equi-shower, which can be suspended from the roof or attached to the wall.

STABLE OVERHANGS
provide a very easy and convenient location for the Equi-shower although the height restrictions can mean this position is only suitable for smaller horses.

WALL AND POST HANGING
gives great flexibility and is probably best illustrated by looking at the photos on this website. Wall and post brackets are available from Equi-shower with a standard arm length of 24" (60 cm). Longer arm lengths can be supplied on request.

The unit comes with clips to fix onto your own fittings or the post/wall brackets.

What size horse or pony can use an Equi-shower and is there a restriction on the head room?
There is no restriction on the head room as the equi-shower can be installed at any height with no limitations on the width of the horse

Installing your equi-shower using the post or wall brackets, available from Equi-shower, gives you complete flexibility in deciding how high you want your shower to be and thus how much head room you desire for your horses.

The Equi-shower can also be supplied with a manual pulley system to lower or raise the shower rail quickly and easily if you need to shower varying heights of horses and ponies. The pulley system can be attached directly overhead or to the post or wall brackets giving complete flexibility on the site of your equi-shower and making it eminently suitable for existing wash boxes.

Can I use the standard fittings already on my hosepipe?
Yes. Equi-shower has been specifically designed to fit readily obtainable standard hosepipe fittings.

What about maintenance?
It needs no maintenance, no cleaning or filling with soap.

How does the Equi-shower reach under the horse?
The shower delivers water to the top of the horse in a fan shape. The water travels down and curves around the body of the horse and legs due to the design of the spray nozzles. However further areas of the horse such as the sheath, 'armpits' etc will benefit from the use of the 'flexi hose'. This is an easily attached and operated hand held coiled hose with an adjustable spray head. This can be purchased separately from Equi-shower.

How difficult is the Equi-shower to assemble?
It is very straight forward - nothing like flat pack furniture! It should only take about 5 - 10 minutes to assemble. If you order the adjustable system allow a bit longer to assemble.

Deciding where to site it may take a little time. It needs to be easily accessible for convenience with good drainage, adequate head room and close to a good water supply, either hot or cold, via a hose pipe. If installing using the post and bracket system ensure the posts are secure before hanging the shower.

Will my horse be frightened by the shower system?
Every horse will behave differently, but we have found that horses adapt quickly and easily to water from above provided you take care when introducing them to the shower. Don't use the spray above the horse's head until he is totally comfortable with having his body showered. This final stage of all three jets working, may take either a few days or a few weeks depending on the horse. It is perfectly satisfactory to use the shower effectively without using the spray nearest the horse's head i.e. with just two jets working.

What is the best way of introducing my horse to his Equi-shower?
We suggest, as the very first stage, that the horse is allowed to view and stand alongside the shower initially without it running. Then repeat the exercise with the spray jets operating.

If you think he may be startled by overhead water let him get accustomed to his shower wearing a turnout rug. Do not rush him to accept his Equi-shower. Allow him to get used to standing under the shower rail before turning on the spray heads. When he is relaxed and happy we recommend that only the rear spray jet is switched initially and the other jets introduced gradually.

Does the Equi-shower make a noise?
Yes. A low hissing sound is made by the spray nozzles as they dispense an intense mist. As with any water dispenser, when the Equi-shower is initially switched on the residual air in the pipes will release making the first jets of water stronger and louder. We therefore recommend releasing this pressure prior to the horse entering the showering area.

How safe is an Equi-shower? What is it made of?
As horse-owners ourselves, the Equi-shower has been designed with safety in mind and well tested. It is made of stainless steel with lightweight powder coated support pipes and industrial plastic shower pipe. It is robust yet lightweight should a horse rear up and make contact with it.
